THE ANGEL PROJECT WORKING WITH PARKWOOD HOSPITAL FOUNDATION
The Angel Project started in 2008 when we visited Parkwood Hospital Complex Care unit in London Ontario. It was the holiday season but it seemed there were many forgotten individuals in the halls and rooms of the facility.
The Angel Project is aimed at benefitting Long term complex care patients at hospitals across Ontario, but mainly Parkwood Hospital and the Parkwood hospital Foundation.
The program benefits patients who have been hospitalized for 10 years or more, and HAD NO VISITORS. Either because they have no family and friends, or because they have simply been given up on, abandoned by the world. They are too sick to be moved to a nursing home and will spend their remainder of their days in Parkwood. Alone. Our current patients, we lose many each year and new one are added to the list, are between 18 and 65 years of age. Their conditions range from MS, and ALS, but most are accident victims. Majority are car accidents, but also skate board accidents, ski and snow board accidents, as well as gunshot wounds. These patients are just like you and I, but most of them are paralyzed to a certain degree and some are on ventilators.
Swedish School Halton Incorporated is a big supporter of TAP. Students write letters to a patient. One of our patients has not left his room in 10 years. He has never had a visitor. The only company he gets is when a nurse has to sit down with him and read the letters the children write. Each time he cries, and smiles. No one has thought of him in so many years, and the nurses continually tell us what a difference we are making. Every Christmas, SSH students make cards and purchase Christmas gifts for one patient. The gift often consist of items we take for granted, a sweet smelling soap versus the hospital soap, crest toothpaste versus the hospital baking soda paste, their own blanket or a stuffed animal. This is the highlight of their year. For months hospital staff and others write cards and tell us about how much good it has done. For many it was their first Christmas gift in years. This is also the time of year when our patients become the most depressed and really need to know that someone in the world is thinking about them. But there are only a few students and so many patiens we desperately need your help. Once a year we do a fundraiser and donate 100% of funds to the hospital to fund either a party for them, an outing, AV equipment or whatever may be needed on the floor. But it goes directly to our patients on 3BW.
Last year we were able to donate WII systems to the floor. This was one of the most appreciated gifts as it keeps them involved. Many can play the WII since they can use their arms and hands. There was also enough money left over that 8 of the patients got to go to a KISS concert. This was the first time in many years they had left the hospital grounds. Outings are very costly and the social agenda is always last on the list for funding but first on the list for recovery.
So it is with the deepest of gratitude and compassion that I ask you to please donate and help remember the forgotten. These are the people that we do not know about or do not remember, behind the walls of every complex care unit sits a once carefree soul who is desperate for a reason to live.
This year 100% of donations will go to fund a paid companion to sit with our patients for an hour a week, just to talk or read and offer some human interaction. If we manage to raise enough funds we will be able to add a few more patients to our list, and perhaps this year they will get a small holiday gift as well.
