Wine Pairing for Smoked Bacon and Gruyere Tart

Dear Wine Ladies,

I’ve got a favorite recipe that I discovered a couple of years ago for a leek tart, with Gruyere cheese and smoked bacon. A few ladies will be coming over for the long weekend and this will be on the menu for a light brunch item. I’d like to serve a nice white wine, not a Chardonnay or a Sauvignon Blanc, something a little different. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Leesa

Dear Leesa,

Sounds delicious and we love your adventurous spirit when it comes to wine! We’ve got the perfect suggestion, a dry white wine, although even when dry seems a little sweet, a Gewurztraminer would be awesome. Typically very aromatic, this rich and luscious wine is well equipped to stand up to all the elements of your tart; the richness of the cheese and the pastry, as well as the smokiness of the bacon. These wines, well known for their aroma of lychee and rose petals, no shrinking violet when it comes to a full  bouquet (excuse the pun) also have good acidity making them an excellent partner for richer foods. As an alternative, why not try a Riesling, one with a hint of sweetness or a sparkling wine? Both of which, in our opinion are under rated as perfect partners for a variety of dishes.
