Twenty Valleys Winter WineFest adds some sparkle to a winter favourite. There is a new reason to venture out on a chilly January weekend this year.29 reasons, in fact. Visitors to the NEW Winter WineFest will be able to sample over 50 wines from 29 area wineries, and this year icewine will share centre stage with some of Ontarios best sparkling and premium VQA wines. The not just icewine festival which will be hosted in Jordan Village January 16 and 17th will allow wine enthusiasts to sip and savour from a list of specialty and reserve wines not offered at any other wine festival. The shift away from the traditional Icewine Festival was one of the first changes implemented by the Twenty Valley Tourism Association when they took over the management of the event this November. The Jordan Ice Bar has been very successful, but we wanted to create something that is distinctly Twenty Valley an event that better showcases the variety of premium wines available here, says Dori Andrewes, Event Manager for the Twenty Valley Tourism Association. Many of our most celebrated and popular wineries dont offer icewine and werent able to be a part of past events. It makes sense to put our best wines on display, and to highlight the range of talent in Twenty Valley. Napa Valley located just 60 miles northeast of San Francisco, is one of the most renowned and most diverse winegrowing regions in the world. Napa Valley may only produce 4% of wine from California but 8% of the states vineyards are found there of which Beringer Vineyards is one of the most respected and known throughout the world of wine. Beringer Vineyards one of the legendary American wineries established in 1876 is the 3rd oldest continuously operating winery in Napa Valley. Even during the failed experiment of prohibition Beringer Vineyards operated producing holy wine for medicinal reasons, laughingly explained Jerry. We were also surprised to learn that Beringer Vineyards is the only winery in the world that has won the #1 red and white wine in the world. Now thats impressive. The fact is the simplicity, most food is wine friendly and its only in the extremes that there are rare exceptions, Jerry revealed. This week Torontos top mixologists convened on Queen Street at Brooklynn http://brooklynnbar.com/ rock- n- roll bar to compete in the Global Grand Prix Cocktail Competition sponsored by Havana Club http://www.havana-club.com/ of Cuba. The mandate, to create a trio of Cuban cocktails based on the popular Cuban signature drinks, such as the Mojito. It was an afternoon of excitement as the top 5 all vied for a chance to represent Canada at the global mix-off taking place in Cuba in May 2010. Each bartender wowed us with their creativity, knowledge, technical agility, speed and personality! The pressure was on as each contender had only 7 minutes to dazzle the judges, their taste buds and the thirsty spectators. The contenders for the Toronto crown included Brad Gubbins from Toronto Institute of Bartending, Adrian Stein, Sopra Upper Lounge, Gavin MacMillan, BartenderOne Corp, Renata Clingen, Teatro Restaurant and Jordan Bushell from Brassaii. It wasnt an easy task for the judges, Adam McDowell, National Post, Graham Duncan, NOW Magazine and Benjamin Leszcz editor www.DailyXY.com. The spectacular array of Cuban inspired cocktails included of course the best rum Havana Club, classic ingredients such as lime and mango juice in Renatas Playa Amore to more unusual ingredients such Kumquats as in Adrians cocktail 7 Cubans in the Bronx. This 23 minute film Survivor's Guide to Freedom from Violence is all about woman fleeing abuse and helping them navigate through the support services available here in Canada. "Vintner's Luck". Caro has brought together a young international cast for the film. Belgian actor Jérémie Renier plays Sobran Jodeau, with New Zealander Keisha Castle-Hughes as his beautiful but troubled wife, Celeste. French Actor Gaspard Ulliel is Xas, an angel who seems more human than divine. American actress Vera Farmiga is baroness Aurora de Valday, an aristocrat who encourages Sobran in his winemaking ambitions, and becomes romantically involved with the peasant vintner. Caro's third film to be premiered in Toronto, and is already generating a substantial amount of Oscar buzz.

He joined us to discuss his last film project Dog Pound, directed by the French director Kim Chapiron currently in post production. The film is a prison drama set in a juvenile detention center whereby Goodyear ( played by Lawrence), an experienced, strict yet empathetic guard is in charge.On any given day, more than 100,000 children are held in detention centers in North America. 6o% will go on to become multiple offenders Lets hope to see the film at next years TIFF.
