This week’s wine pick I discovered while at the bar waiting to be seated for dinner.

A delicious white wine, something off the beaten track. Surprise.The glass placed before me… as I swirled, notes of peach, and touches of lemon and mango… so seductive, then when I tasted, nicely crisp, delish with apple, lemon and a hint of yellow plum, mouth filling and simply yummy. Went great with my thin crust white pizza with wild bison sausage

My great find is from the producer Di Berardino, the 2013 Pecorino.

Pecorino is also the name of the grape. From the region of Abruzzo Italy, situated on the Adriatic coast, Price point $24.00 local here in Ontario. And by the way 100% organic!

On this week’s radio show…

The Toronto International Film Festival in full swing. We thought we would have a look at some of the roles that wine has played in a variety of movies. What impact has these films have had on you the consumer! Take the movie Sideways for example, the sales of Pinot Noir skyrocketed and what happened to the sales of Merlot?

They tanked…. for awhile anyways! Well we’re going to find out why because joining us on the show is Frank Ostini, the owner of the Hitching Post II Restaurant, frequented by Miles and Jack in the film Sideways, now celebrating it’s 10th anniversary.
Also joining us, one of the most influential wine critics, journalists, authors, wine TV show hosts, Jancis Robinson about the film Red Obsession, the story of wine from Bordeaux to Bejing…. An incredible story.

Also, Kathryn Kates, proprietor of Kathyrn Kates Public Relations, journalist and song writer, Kathryn currently writes a column Celebrity Dinner Date, of which we were one, or a duo, we’ll chat with Kathryn about that as well as introduce you to singer and songwriter Daniel Casavant and their new single, “Walking From The Clouds”.

And finally the Founder of the Toronto International Film Festival and now founder of another festival The Niagara Integrated Film Festival, Bill Marshall with tons of stories.

All that coming up! What a line up!

Well I find myself in the same camp as Miles did in Sideways. He adored Pinot Noir as so do I! As you know Pinot Noir is often referred to as the heart break grape, because its so hard to grow. Just like the womanizer Jack broke Stephanie’s heart (played by Sandra Oh) in the movie. This grape can be very fickle indeed and break a winemakers heart too.

My pick is the Hahn Winery Pinot Noir 2012. Hanh is a family owned winery out of Monterey. They’ve been making wine for over 30 years and have maintained their commitment to high quality and handcrafted wines. You can depend on Hahn!

This Pinot gives me what I like! It’s medium in body, wonderful aromas of strawberry, cherry and notes of spice. $18.95, a super buy

Well seeing as we’re going to be starting off today’s radio show with a wine film that took place in California. I was feeling a little badly about the lowly regarded grape Merlot in our first film today (Sideways). Therefor, I picked a California Merlot. Now I must confess I don’t usually gravitate automatically to Merlot, but I did come across one this week that I really liked. It’s owned by Delicato Vineyards in the Lodi appellation of California.

181 Merlot Lodi by Delicate Vineyards

And their tag line is “Not all vines are created equal”. The 181 refers to the vine stock which is “the most coveted vine stock in Bordeaux. So how did I like it? I truly did. It was rich and elegant. It had ripe fruity plum and cherry notes, hints of spice and great finish.Great Merlot buy for $16.95

And so although the grape was dumped on in the hit movie Sideways by Miles, we say don’t be such a snob Miles,, pick a bottle up tonight for TIFF!

Ask The Wine Ladies…

Dear Wine Ladies

Over the last little while it seems that Spanish wines seem to be popping up at various dinner parties and get together more and more. We really enjoyed one of our most recent white wine discoveries called  Viura (we think) which we were told was a Spanish wine that cost less than $15.00. Neither my boyfriend or I can remember where it came from in Spain and was wondering if this is the name of an area, a brand name or a town. Any additional info on this wine would be appreciated.
