With Malbec World Day just around the corner all eyes of the wine world will be turned to Argentina.
Although, Malbec did put Argentina on the world wine map, they are also known for many other grape varieties as well. Including one of my faves, Cabernet Sauvignon. My wine pick this week in celebration is the Fabre Montmayou Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2012. Produced by Fabre Montmayou Winery & Vineyards from the fruit of 30 year old vines. One of his missions of the owner and winemaker Hervé Fabre to only purchase or use grapes from older vineyards.
Susanne’s Wine Pick
These grapes come from the Lujan de Cuyo region.
This wine is 100% cab and 40% of it spends a full 12 months in French oak barrels as well. This wine has a tremendously enticing aroma of blackberries and cassis but also hints of leather and on the palate it is juicy and fruity, full bodied and soft silky tannins with a long finish. Tremendous value….wait for it… $16.95
Malbec World Day just around the corner, April 17th, 2015. So I decided to go with the Malbec, one of my faves. I truly enjoy this varietal especially when it delivers like this one.
The grapes come from vines that over 60 years old, in the region of Vistalba.
Talk about attention to detail, first it is all manual harvested, in small trays, not to damage the grapes, then the grapes are selected by bunches first, and then again grape by grape.
The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 12 months, the fining is done with fresh egg whites and then aged another 12 months in the bottle before release.
This is an elegant, complex wine with juicy notes of blackberries and cherries on the nose and that hint of violet and liquorish typical of great Malbec, and the tannins are soft, the wine is just yummy!
The 5th annual Malbec World Day is coming up April 17th There will be tons of tastings, events and parties going on all over the globe, all devoted to this luscious, deep coloured, spicily rich very popular now…red grape. Yes, we said desert, albeit a desert that sits at the foot of the stunning Andes mountains with the snow melt that comes down and quenches the thirst of the vines. It is the perfect home for the vineyards with a climate and soils that allow Malbec to have found its niche.
Coming up on next week’s show, we are “grape stomping mad about Malbec” from Argentina! And so are a lot of other wine lovers, experts and aficionados around the world.

103 Minutes I Comedy, Drama, Romance I 2014 l Canada I English I World Premiere I PG Director: Sergio Navarretta Cast: Enrico Colantoni, Krista Bridges, David Cubitt, Brooke Palsson
Wine and romance are both uncorked in this delightful journey into Niagara’s spectacular wine country. The film was shot in various locations, including several wineries, a B&B and a restaurant–keep your eyes open to spot the locale–and employed dozens of local cast and crew. The film celebrates the region while not glossing over the work required keeping a relationship strong. While Niagara Falls has enjoyed the moniker “Honeymoon Capital of the World” since the early 1900s, amour seems trickier for the couples in The Colossal Failure of the Modern Relationship. Champagne Sweetness, from Brut Nature to Demi-Sec.
Dear Wine Ladies,
How does one know whether a Champagne is dry, off dry or sweet? The terms on the bottles seem very confusing. We prefer Champagnes that are sweeter. Last week we were told to select a Champagne labelled demi-sec or doux, doesn’t that mean off-dry?
Thanks for your question, it seems to be one that comes up pretty regularly. True, deciphering the sweetness levels of Champagne can be confusing, particularly as you mentioned when “demi-sec”actually refers to a Champagne that contains approximately 35-50 grams of sugar per litre. Below is a continuum of driest Champagnes to sweetest. Brut natural (no sugar added), brut, extra-dry, sec, demi-sec and finally doux.

One of my favorite courses is dessert.I was not disappointed when much to my delight an incredible orange cream semifreddo flambe was paired with something from back home. So a nod to Aureole Wine Director Harley Carbery for adding this Icewine to the list! The Jackson-Triggs Reserve Vidal Icewine 2012 is my wine pick today!
As always, so luscious with seductive aromas of tropical fruits, mango, apricot and papaya. Rich on the palate with that wonderful acidity to balance this delectable wine, we sure know how to make our signature wine here in Niagara and Jackson Triggs, Canada’s most awarded winery does it fabuloso!

One of my favorite courses from the Charlie Palmer Tasting menu was the 1st course, a blood orange salmon gravlax and lightly smoked ora king salmon dish. Incredible! This was paired with the Schramsberg Rosé Brut Methode Traditionelle 2011, a delectable sparkling wine. It is my wine pick for this week!
Schramsberg located in Calistoga, Napa Valley, California and founded in 1862, this producer has legs!
The 2011 is a delectable blend of 61% Pinot Noir and 39% Chardonnay. The dose of chardonnay added for complexity, says the winemaker. Handcrafted using select cool climate north coast vineyards,
So delicious, so enticing with aromas of strawberry, and touches of citrus… bright acidity on the palate with a long, refreshing and lingering finish.. So relish….Schramsberg Rosé Brut Methode Traditionelle 2011.
